On October 29, 2024, the APEC Center for Technology Foresight (APEC CTF) participated in the virtual international launch of the HSE Global Cities Innovation Index (GCII) 2024, organized by the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge, HSE University. This event marked an important milestone, showcasing the innovation capacities of cities worldwide.

Dr. Surachai Sathitkunarat, Executive Director of the APEC Center for Technology Foresight (APEC CTF) and President of the Office of the National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO), an advisory board member for the HSE GCII, expressed sincere appreciation to the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) for developing the GCII 2024 report. He highlighted the report’s significance, noting that it provides a detailed analysis of the innovation capacities of cities around the world. This report is an important resource for understanding how cities can position themselves in the global race for innovation leadership.

Dr. Surachai emphasized that the GCII 2024 report offers valuable insights for governments, businesses, and policymakers, helping them better understand their strengths and identify areas for improvement in innovation and urban development.

The report also highlights the performance of six cities in Thailand: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Kanchanaburi. Among these, Bangkok stands out, ranking 50th overall and showcasing its strong urban environment and growing potential in technological development and creative industries. The remaining cities are recognized for their early-stage contributions to innovation, reflecting their potential for future growth.

In his remarks, Dr. Surachai brought a foresight perspective to the discussion. He noted that the innovations we see today are laying the foundation for the future. As cities grow and adapt, they must look beyond present trends and ask, What’s next? Foresight helps us imagine multiple future possibilities, guiding policymakers and innovators to anticipate challenges and seize emerging opportunities. By integrating foresight into their strategies, cities can not only sustain their current momentum but also lead the way in shaping a future where technology, creativity, and sustainability converge.
