On December 20, 2024, the National Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation Policy Council Office (NXPO) and the APEC Center for Technology Foresight (APEC CTF) collaborated with the Multidisciplinary Research Institute (MDRI) of Chiang Mai University (CMU) to organize the first workshop under the theme “Envision the Future: Shaping Future Directions.” The event aimed to support MDRI’s strategic development by addressing emerging trends and drivers in economic and social dimensions.

The Multidisciplinary Research Institute (MDRI) has a core mission to integrate diverse areas of knowledge, including science and technology, health, and social sciences, to produce high-quality, innovative research. This aligns with the institute’s goal of fostering a research ecosystem that promotes national development and supports CMU’s 13th Strategic Education Development Plan.

Dr. Kommate Jitvanichphaibool, Deputy Director of APEC CTF, and his team facilitated the workshop using the Foresight Canvas tool to explore emerging trends and challenges while developing strategic scenarios for MDRI. Participants exchanged ideas on trends, driving forces, and plausible scenarios for MDRI over the next five years.

This activity is part of the “Strategic Foresight for Future Directions” project, which will continue refining strategies tailored to MDRI’s future needs. It also seeks to strengthen collaboration and enhance academic and innovative development, positioning CMU and Thailand as leaders on the global stage.
