Integrated Foresight for Sustainable Economic Development and
Eco-Resilience in ASEAN Countries
Background and Introduction
The (APEC-CTF) and the National Science Technology and Innovation Policy Office (STI) of Thailand in partner with the Rockefeller Foundation are hosting the “Integrated Foresight for Sustainable Economic Development and Eco-Resilience in ASEAN Countries”.
The aim of the workshop is to apply an integrated Foresight approach coupled with sustainable economic and ecological choices to develop policies, strategies and actions that advance science, technology and innovation for inclusive development of ASEAN countries in agreement with the ASEAN Krabi Initiative’s vision of the ASEAN leaders in promoting “Science, Technology and Innovation for a Competitive, Sustainable and Inclusive ASEAN”. Successful completion of the project will shape a model from the use of Foresight technique to support sustainable development throughout the ASEAN member states. The results of the project can be used to formulate a new set of insights about what may be possible by 2020 after the completion of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015 in terms of stable, productive and innovative employment prospects in the emerging ASEAN economies.
The series of four workshops of the same title that will be organized from January 2013 – October 2013 in order to synthesize a science, technology, and innovation foresight policy-orientated scenarios report to incorporate insights from knowledge and expertise of key stakeholders, partners, experts and ASEAN representatives from the governments, policy makers, academics, and private sectors in the regional workshops to develop implications for future development pathways and putting findings and recommendations into appropriate actions and implementations in the following three common and interrelated issues of:
1.Future of Energy Policies, Strategies and Actions
2.Future of Water Policies, Strategies and Actions
3.Future of Food Policies, Strategies and Actions
The recommended Energy-Water-Food policy and possible strategies and actions will include the issues of security, production, resource usage and management, relevant and appropriate technology foresight, inclusive STI with focus on bottom of the pyramid, relations and impacts to the environment, local communities and ecological and economic development of ASEAN countries.
